Back to NYC

Back home in NYC for a few days before I board another plane this weekend. Dave flies in tomorrow night and it's my goal to show the man a good time before he heads back to London. We got a lot accomplished at The Ship but still have some holes to fill this week before mixing can commence.

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 12

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 12

Our final day here at The Ship and we couldn't be more excited with how things are sounding. I don't wanna spill too many beans but its safe to say this record is gonna be wicked. Thanks to Aaron E. from the great band Earlimart for letting us use his amazing studio. He definitely went above and beyond the call of duty many times and I can't thank him enough.

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 11

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 11

Today we had a day off. I had made all these plans to go hiking or to the beach but ended up sleeping the entire day. We've been putting in some really long days at The Ship so a day of rest was very much in order. Back to the studio tomorrow to tidy up a few tracks and work on a few more. I've really fallen in love with this city on multiple levels and don't want to leave. Not to worry New York, I'll be back with you in few days to try to work things out.

Sleepless in Los Angeles Day 9 & 10

Sleepless in Los Angeles Days 9 & 10

Laid down more guitars today, a few keys, and even a little percussion. Dave and I made it our mission to use every piece of cool gear that The Ship has to offer. So far we've done a damn good job it. The highlight for me yesterday was getting a chance to listen to a unreleased Earlimart/Grandaddy split that Aaron mastered a few hours earlier. You guys need to hear this. It will really blow you away.

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 8

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 8

Man oh man! I thought the burrito truck in BK was good. I was wrong. There are a million authentic mobile Mexican stands here in Eagle Rock and all of them put our little truck to shame. I just sent Dave to get us a couple Tortas. Hopefully the quick Spanish lesson I gave him won't offended the two ladies who [wo]man the ship.

Update: Dave hates Tortas. (Soggy bread reminds him of his ill spent childhood) I still love them.

Sleepless In Los Angeles - Day 7

Sleepless In Los Angeles - Day 7

Today we thought the devil was talking to us through an old amp. Turns out it was just the tape echo we were using. Davey of the band Everest stopped by to say hello to Aaron. We played with them at Sundance last year and I'm really glad things are going well for them. Those of you back in NYC should check them out at MSG w/ Neil Young in the next few weeks.

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 6

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 6

This studio is amazing. Really couldn't ask for a nicer recording situation or host in Aaron E. No time to type - gotta lay down some guitars.

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 5

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 5

Just got back to the hotel after a long days work. It's really hard to believe it but Dave and I added 2 more notches to our belt today making for 11 tracked songs total. (4 or so more to go) I thought by this point my voice would be totally shot but it isn't - I just sound a bit like those raspy youngsters - Miley Cryus or the jail bait version of Lindsay Lohan. Tomorrow starts our time at Earlimart's studio The Ship. They have a ton of great guitars and amps and even an OPTIGAN! Let's hope it works!

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 4

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 4

Today we tackled the basics for "Ozone St" and "Love/Hate." I know I've said it before but this record is really coming together nicely. (besides Dave's drug-fueled tyrants of course) At this point I've gotten used to having a tube mic or two thrown at my head so don't worry about me. I'll be fine. I've been on the hunt for some so-cal mexican food since I've arrived on Monday. So far though, my belly has only seen In-N-Out Burger multiple times. Tomorrow will be different though!

Sleepless In Los Angeles - Day 3

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 3

Check out the view from Echo Park this evening! Pretty much from the second you move to NYC everyone programs you to hate LA. Well NYC, I'm sorry to say but you I really like it out here. Unless you hate warm weather, palm trees, and breast implants I suggest you give it a shot. As one of my English friends told me. It's all about who you surround yourself with. Luckily, I've only met amazing people so far. It also helps that we are well on our way to recording an amazing LP for you guys. Tracks we tackled today include: "All In", "Tip of a Plane" and "Murderous Air, Backlit Sky."

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 2

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 2

Went and saw my friend and guitar players band Phonograph last night at The Roxy w/ Grace Potter and have to say they fucking killed. Going out is no excuse to slack on the recording so we started bright and early today. Things continue to go as smooth as any of us could have hoped. We tracked 2 complete songs today! ("Stilts" and "I Still Hear Oceans") Talk to any of your musician friends and they most likely will say I'm lying. Truth is, Dave and I know how to work together very well so if we hit a problem we'll access the situation and sort it out immediately. It's only 6:30 our time so most likely we'll start on another one before the night is over. I can't wait for you guys to hear this!

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 1

Sleepless in Los Angeles - Day 1

Hello from Los Angeles where Dave Lynch and myself are busy working on a new record! Today is day #1 which has us laying down the basic tracks at my friend Shana's home studio before we head off into a world of fancy mixing boards and microphones this weekend. This afternoon we worked on a track called "Right All Along" which is coming together quite well. Besides hearing a Mexican radio station through an old Ampex pre-amp we have very little to report in the way of technical gliches. Gotta go lay down some vocals now. I'll be updating this site every day with our progress so check back often!

Just a quick note to let you know that my show at Rehab on the 21st has been cancelled due to some last minute scheduling conflicts. The good news is that there's a damned good reason for this which I will share as soon as I get off the plane...

Stay tuned.
